A round of the Hard Enduro World Championship for the first time in 2025, South Africa can be proud of 18 year old Hilton, KZN World Junior Hard Enduro Champion James Moore winning his maiden Roof of Africa in Lesotho over the weekend. Moore held ’25 World Champion Mani Lettenbichler’s KTM, Husqvarna hero Billy Bolt and the rest of the field off for an historic first Hard Enduro victory on his KTM.

The Roof of Africa has always been an epic race. First run over the Malutis over a half century ago, tales of mountain adventures abound over the years. In the late ‘seventies, some 30 riders were trapped in the mountains when they were snowed in. Lost, fortunately, most of them found haven in a schoolhouse at the foot of the Letele Pass before finding their way out the next day. 

A few years later, several riders were cut off when the Senqu River burst its banks.
