The opportunity to compete in the Nissan Spirit of Africa competition not only brought out the best in the new Navara PRO-4X Warrior bakkie, but it also proved a great opportunity to put Dunlop’s top performing Grandtrek AT5 tyres to the ultimate test. 

As part of the launch of the new Nissan Navara PRO-4X Warrior, the Spirit of Africa bakkies are exclusively shod with Dunlop’s tougher than ever Grandtrek AT5 multipurpose tyres. “The Dunlop Grandtrek AT5 is the ideal tyre for the Nissan Spirit of Africa,” event coordinator and SA motorsport legend Sarel van der Merwe explains. “Building on the success of the Grandtrek AT25, which impressed us last year, the Grandtrek AT5 tyre is even better suited to our needs. It has proven its superiority beyond any doubt at the 2025 Nissan Spirit of Africa 2025 event.”

The Dunlop Grandtrek AT5, is a tyre that sets new standards in off-road capability, grip, and braking performance. Designed to excel in both dirt and wet conditions, the Grandtrek AT5 delivers exceptional mileage throughout its tyre life, and it comes with a 100 000 kms mileage warrantee.  But the Grandtrek AT5 isn't just about off-road prowess; it performs equally well on tarmac, offering a smooth and reliable ride. 

The Grandtrek AT5 is based on a new Dunlop super abrasion micro-structure carbon rubber compound developed to deliver best tread block rigidity, improved handling, and reduced wear. The AT5 also adopts a new long, connected block tread pattern to best distribute contact pressure for ultimate cornering, straight line, and braking stability.

The new block design applies even pressure across the full contact area for maximum adhesion between the tyre and driving surface. This not only significantly improves the tyre life but also ensures best gravel and wet grip performance. The Dunlop Grandtrek AT5 also features an improved new stone ejector on the shoulder of the main groove to reduce tyre stone damage and even further prolong tyre life.

Dunlop promises 50% more tyre life, 25% better handling stability, 10% improved dirt and wet driving performance and even 8% quieter running. All of which brought enhanced precision and performance to the Nissan Navara Warrior PRO-4X across all Sarel van der Merwe’s most challenging Spirit of Africa tests. “The Dunlop Grandtrek AT5 is the ideal SUV, 4x4 and bakkie tyre,” Sarel adds. “The best of both worlds.”
