Synthetic lubricants are made up, rather than refined from crude oil. Crude base oils have natural limitations in viscosity, break-down over time, and longevity. Albeit more expensive, a compatible synthetic will out-perform and outlast a natural oil alternative, while providing cost savings though better energy utilisation due to less mechanical friction. Most modern cars today require synthetic, or blended synthetic oils.
